Journey Through Our Valleys

The Valleys of South Wales are a unique, fascinating area rich in landscape, history and heritage. The central Valleys of Rhondda, Cynon and Taff link together to join some of the most famous names in Wales such as Pontypridd, Merthyr Tydfil, Treorchy and Aberdare. Bordered in the south by Wales’ capital city, Cardiff and to the north by the Brecon Beacons, these valleys have the history of Wales embedded in them. Rhondda evokes the images of coal and mining at its peak, but now returned to the green beauty harking back to the days before mining and yet retaining the fascinating communities of terraced housing built to house the miners, their families and the many trades that grew up in support of this industry. Cynon is perhaps less well known but which is there to explore with some beautiful scenery and stunning views. Merthyr Tydfil was the centre of the iron industry and, combined with coal, saw Wales become the first industrial nation in the world. The wealth created by these activities in times gone by is there to see at places such as Cyfarthfa Castle. Taff is another famous Welsh name, a river rising in the Brecon Beacons and flowing through Merthyr, the Taff Vale, Pontypridd and down to the sea at Cardiff.

To journey through our Valleys is to discover the very heart of Wales. We welcome you to explore by guided tour, car, bike or foot, with the links, breaks, accommodation offering and tours below offering some suggestions on how to experience this part of our country.
